Follow the White Bilby
On the banner you now carry, you will see a small creature — the white bilby. Why him? Because the bilby is a keeper of hidden paths.
The bilby does not roar, nor does it demand the stage. It moves in silence, shaping the earth with its paws, carving out tunnels where few ever look. The Modern Custodian does the same — unseen at times, yet reshaping the world by the way they walk it.
Its tail is black and white, echoing the magpie’s feather that marks my sigil. Two colours, two truths: reflection and distortion. Custodians know both are real, and both must be faced.
Once, Australians were asked to see the bilby as our rabbit — a stand-in, a substitute, a cultural trick. But the bilby resisted that costume. It refused to be another people’s story. In this, it is kin to us: authenticity cannot be borrowed, only lived.
And the white of its fur? That is the invitation. For centuries, seekers have been told to “follow the white rabbit.” I tell you instead: follow the white bilby. Not into illusion, but into presence. Not into Wonderland, but onto Country. Not into fantasy, but into Authentic You.
This is why I chose him. The bilby is a quiet companion, a rare guide, and a reminder that even the smallest of beings can carry the heaviest of truths.
